Graduated to a new space!

We are pleased to announce that DTC has been given the keys to a new rehearsal space! Down the road from where we had been rehearsing, we were given our keys last Wednesday by Margarita with her blessing to do with it as we please, as well as decorate it the way we would like, and are excited to begin our creative journey in this larger, more conducive environment, that we know will successfully meet the needs of our group.

Last week, we were able to divide up into pairs and put "pen to paper" around the following themes:

- racism

- police brutality

- "Me Too" movement

- plight of the "Dreamer"

- Cesar Chavez

- Martin Luther King

It was a wonderful brainstorming session that helped us relate to how these issues affect the members of our group individually.

This week, we we went a step further and created Image Theatre around the same themes that would later be "dynamisized."

But first, we used a couple of exercises to warm up; DTC was in the mood to play the "Park Bench Game," only I made the tweak of incorporating the "Levels Game," as well as required each participant to fully decide on what it was their character wanted during the exercise.

(Still not sure what Angel was wanting with this pose.)

"Simple Activity" Exercise: Dance Party

In the "Simple Activity" Exercise," one actor was asked to begin a simple activity on the stage and other actors were to join in with another activity that would compliment/contribute the one being shown.

"Sales Pitch" Exercise

One day I asked my colleagues at Jobsite Theater to recommend their favorite theatre games and Roxanne Fay mentioned the one pictured here: DTC was asked to create a spontaneous sales pitch for an unknown item they had 10 seconds to look at before improvising. Sarah is holding some sort of green-glittered angel that she made into a time-travelling machine!

The following pictures depict the images that were created and dynamisized for our new piece:

Image Theatre: "Police Brutality"

Image Theatre: "Racism"

Image Theatre: "Me Too" Movement

Image Theatre: "Plight of the Dreamer"

Image Theatre: "Plight of the Dreamer"

I believe the image below belongs to our "Me Too Movement" theme, but I don't remember exactly. Angel asked me to take it because he liked the way it looked and I feel I remember Fernando using it during the dynamisation of this theme, but I'm not sure. (Angel was right though; it's a rad picture!)

(Angel said I had to take it.)

We did some great work and I'm excited to combine what was created from the two days of rehearsal into a workable script we will be able to begin tweaking and rehearsing for our next original production, to be performed in a month and a half.

Wish us luck!
